Line & Dot Compositions
Directly inspired by Admin Hofmann’s 1965 Manual of Graphic Design, this project explores the core of all visual communication — basic geometry.
While technology and style continue to evolve, the basic design principles remain unchanged: whether a circle is drawn with a protractor by hand or generated by a computer, the circle still communicates its roundness.
With these ideas in mind, we were assigned to create 6 compositions based on 6 words/concepts using only black and white and lines and dots. The entirety of this project was experimental and we were encouraged to try different things. Using principles like repetition, subtraction, contrast, and scale allowed us to create different compositions that allowed us to find the design that worked best to most abstractly represent our chosen word.
